The History
League Stadium was originally built in 1894. In 1991, the original field and grandstand were renovated and expanded by Columbia Pictures for the filming of the movie, "A League of Their Own". Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna starred in this instant classic about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). League Stadium served as the home field for the Rockford Peaches. Original advertisements from the movie still remain along the outfield fence of the ballpark.
The stadium has seen its share of great ballplayers in its history--including a pitching appearance by one of the all time greats, Satchel Paige, back in 1962.
In 1995, League Stadium was used in the HBO movie, "Soul of the Game"--an award-winning movie focused on Negro League baseball.
In 1996, professional baseball came to League Stadium when the Dubois County Dragons of the Heartland League were formed. The league folded in 1998 after three seasons, but professional baseball wasn't gone for long. The Frontier League's Dubois Country Dragons started play at the stadium in 1999. The Dragons played at the stadium from 1999-2002 before moving to Kenosha, WI.
In 2005, baseball returned again with the arrival of the Dubois County Bombers of the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL). In 2009, the Bombers joined the Prospect League before eventually migrating over to the highly competitive Ohio Valley League in 2013. They still compete in the Ohio Valley League today.
The seating capacity of League Stadium is now ~3,000 with the recent 2021 addition of the new 'Upper Deck' along the left field baseline. Brand new, extra-large MLB-style stadium seats were added in 2023--further increasing the comfort and aesthetic of the stadium.
