"Our goal was to put together a group that had a passion for the great American pastime," said Bob Hemond, a partner in the seven-member Hannibal Baseball Investment Group. "Our vision was to find ourselves a ballpark and league that had a rich sense of tradition. We executed on that goal and by doing that we brought together those people that had the same passion as we do. "We're proud to announce that our goal of bringing baseball back to Hannibal will be a reality. And our vision of renovating Clemens Field with a partnership of the city of Hannibal will be a reality." According to Lee Thomas, a former major league general manager and a member of the team's advisory board, the last time Hannibal participated in a league of this caliber was 1955 when it was a member of a Class D professional league. Larry Owens, another of the ownership partners, said Clemens Field and Hannibal's historic past intrigued him when the search was under way for a ballpark and community. "Hannibal kept coming towards the top," he said. "The people are what made us hone in on this one specifically. The people of the city and the people running the city." George Walley, executive director of Northeast Missouri Economic Development Council, is delighted that an agreement could be reached that will bring the team to Hannibal. "I've been waiting for this day for two months. I'm just very excited about this day," he said. "A lot of work went into it, but the development group that we're working with is very professional. These are baseball professionals, not just folks that love baseball. "The city council was extremely professional. Because of (city manager) Jeff LaGarce's help, the parks department and Hannibal school board, the deal came together quite well." The ownership group has already opened an office at 303 N. Main St. Entry blanks are available there for the "name the team" contest. The winning selection will receive two season tickets, according to Hemond. The ownership group is still in the process of gaining access to the CICL. However, it has already received territorial rights to the Hannibal market. Team officials report they have not begun their search for a team manager. "We're in the process of getting the word out to the college community," said Hemond when asked about potential managerial candidates. It is initially anticipated that the Hannibal club will play between 24 and 30 home games a summer. However, that total could increase as the league grows, said Hemond. It is anticipated that Springfield, Mo., will join the five-team CICL this summer, with Hannibal being added in 2009. Among the teams in the league is Quincy. Mayor Roy Hark said being in the same league with Quincy should ignite a spirited rivalry. "Hannibal is going to take its baseball very, very seriously. We'll have a winning team and all I can say is: Quincy is you better look out because Hannibal is coming after you," he said with a broad smile. "Seriously, I think it's going to create a great rivalry with Quincy. Quincy has a great ballteam and it's a great sister city to us." July 9, 2007 HUNTINGBURG, Ind. VIA CICL WEBSITE - This week's pitcher and player
awards go to two key players who helped the Dubois County Bombers earn a 5-2 record, pulling them into a 4-way tie for first-place at 13-13. The CICL Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 8 is Dan Kapala. The right-hander made two appearances including one start and one five-inning performance during the completion of a suspended game. Kapala earned the victory in each contest. He was the starting and winning pitcher Saturday in the Bombers' 3-0 victory over DuPage pitching 6 innings and allowing only 4 hits. Kapala finished the week 2-0 with 11 innings pitched and allowed only 1 earned run. This is the second pitcher of the week award this summer for the Notre Dame senior-to-be who hails from Royal Oak, Michigan. The Pitcher of the First-Half Award also goes to Kapala. The right- hander's 0.69 ERA leads the league by almost two full runs (qualifying pitchers = 1 IP/game). In the first-half, Kapala made 5 appearances, including 3 starts and allowed a measly 2 earned runs in 26 innings pitched. Opposing hitters batted only .223 against him, struck out 22 times and compiled only 2 extra base hits. The CICL Player of the Week Award this week goes to Derek Melton, also of the Dubois County Bombers. For the week, the left-handed hitting outfielder led the league in batting at .448 (13-29); hits with 13; slugging percentage at .621; total bases with 18; tied for the lead in runs with 8; tied for 2nd in RBI with 6; tied for 3rd in doubles with 2; was 4th in on-base percentage at .469. Melton also cracked a grand- slam versus the DuPage County Dragons on Friday, July 6. Melton is from Trenton, Ohio, and will attend the University of Evansville in the fall. At Midsummer Break CICL is Deadlocked July 08, 2007 — On Friday night Bomber Owner John Bigness checked the CICL website to learn that Danville had defeated Quincy. The results of that game put Danville's record at 12-13 and Quincy's at 13-12.Also on Friday night the Dubois County Bombers hosted the Dupgage Dragons and the Bombers pulled some last inning heroics to pull out a win and give the Bombers a 12-13 record. The loss put the Dragons at 13-12 and share of first place with Quincy. Bigness placed a call to partner Bomber Chris Barney and told him the good news/bad news. "The bad news is you're in last place. The good news is you're a game out of first place." He then thought of the possibilities. "If we beat Dupage on Saturday night and Danville beats Quincy we'll have a four way tie for first place with every team at 13-13." Well that's exactly what happened so at the mid summer break the CICL finds itself in a four way tie for first place with all four teams sporting identical 13-13 records. Furthermore the next 9 games will be critical since whoever is in first place at the All Star Break on July 23rd will host the Playoff Tournament the weekend of August 10th and 11th. "Our players, coaches, staff and owners would love to host the playoff tournament so I'm sure we'll do our best to make it happen", Bigness said. CICL league play resumes on Wednesday night. The Bombers will host Quincy for the first 3 games (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights) of a five game set before traveling to Quincy for Saturday and Sunday night games. First pitch on Wednesday is at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you at the game!

Righthander Eric Smith (Anderson University) is the Bombers probable starter. Former Bomber Cishek Drafted by Florida Marlins June 08, 2007 — Steve Cishek, who played briefly for the Bombers last summer and recently finished his junior season was probably the happiest person in the Cape Cod (MA) village of Falmouth last night.Cishek, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound right-handed pitcher, was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 12th pick of the fifth round, 166th overall, in yesterday's opening day of the Major League Baseball draft. Cishek, a former All-Cape pitcher from Falmouth (MA) High School ('04), was throwing 78-84 mph when he left Falmouth. This season, as a junior at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn., Cishek routinely hit 88-94, even touching 95 on the gun in one game. "It's real exciting," he said last night. "The scout called and said 'Congratulations, enjoy yourself tonight and we'll talk to you again in the next couple of days." Scouts before the draft said the right-hander would probably be drafted somewhere between rounds 3-10. "I was thinking Padres, Orioles or White Sox," Cishek said. "In fact, the White Sox called me before the Marlins did. I thought they'd pick me." Cishek's junior year started out rocky, and he had an ERA of 9.00 when he moved from the rotation to the bullpen. "I felt more comfortable," he said, and finished the season 2-3, 3.14 with three saves, striking out 43 and walking 10 in 43 innings. "Most scouts said they'd see me as a reliever," Cishek said. The Marlins' short-season single-A team, where Cishek will likely be sent after he signs, is in Jamestown, N.Y. Cishek pitched for the Bombers in 2006 before curtailing his season early last summer due to elbow tenderness. At the time he was recovering from elbow surgery. He posted a 0-0 record with a 0.93 E.R.A. in 9 innings for the Bombers allowing 5 hits and recording 8 strikeouts. He was slated to return to the Bombers this season should he decide to forego a professional career but in all likelihood he's going pro. Good luck Steve! Down 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Bombers pushed across 3 tallies on the strength of a Wes Fink infield single, a Casey Martin single to left, a Chris Affinito double to right and an Eric Smith single to left. Danville threatened in the top of the eighth, but Michael Manus came in to slam the door. He retired Dan Black to end the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his first save.Vince Doster, Derek Melton, Martin, Smith and Affinito finished with two hits apiece for the Bombers. Our former manager John Fitzgerald (now an Notre Dame assistant coach) recommended both of these players to my partner Chris Barney after viewing their performance last Fall.
