ZACH BARRETT has been selected as the new manager to replace Brian Smiley who has left the team to take an assistant coaching position at Indiana State University. The change is effective as of 6/14.
Smiley was named Bombers manager early in the 2007 season and led the team to the CICL Championship. This was his third season with the team. Smiley was an assistant coach at Danville Area CC this past year.
Barrett joined the Bombers this season, serving as Smiley's top assistant. He played collegiately at Middle Tennessee State University where he led the team with a .383 batting average in 57 games played. Barrett also played two seasons at Olney Central Community College. The Evansville, Ind. native hit .300 with three home runs, 35 RBI and 15 stolen bases as a freshman. He was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 43rd round as a third baseman after his freshman season. "It is very tough to see Brian go," said assistant general manager Jace Gonnerman. "He was a great manager for our team and will do well at Indiana State. We have a lot of confidence in Zach. This is a great opportunity for a young manager to get his feet wet and gain valuable experience. These are very similar circumstances to the 2007 season. Brian took over in June and led us to the league title. We think Zach can do the same this year."
GRANT BELLAK will close out the season as Barrett's top assistant.
